Lord Murugan, also known as Karthikeya, Skanda, Subramanya, and Kumara, is a revered Hindu deity, especially in Tamil culture. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is considered the god of war, wisdom, and victory.

Birth of Lord Murugan

The story of Lord Murugan’s birth is linked to the destruction of the demon Surapadman. According to the Skanda Purana:

1. The Purpose of His Birth:

   • The demon Surapadman and his brothers, Simhamukha and Tarakasura, had obtained a boon that made them almost invincible. They oppressed both the gods (Devas) and humans.
   • The Devas prayed to Lord Shiva for a savior.

2. Creation from Divine Sparks:

   • Lord Shiva, in deep meditation, opened his third eye and released six powerful sparks.
   • These sparks fell into the holy Saravana Poigai (a divine lake).
   • From these sparks emerged six divine babies, nurtured by the six Krittika (Pleiades) stars, celestial mothers.
   • Goddess Parvati lovingly embraced all six babies, merging them into one radiant child with six faces—Shanmukha (meaning “Six-Faced One”).

Murugan’s Victory over Surapadman

• When Murugan grew up, he was given the divine Vel (spear) by Goddess Parvati.
• Leading the celestial army, he marched toward Surapadman’s fortress at Tiruchendur.
• A fierce battle took place, and Murugan defeated Surapadman.
• The demon, realizing his fate, sought forgiveness. Murugan, showing compassion, transformed him into a peacock (his vahana) and a rooster (his banner).

• Lord Murugan is mainly worshipped in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Sri Lanka.
• His major temples include Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Thiruttani, and Pazhamudircholai.
• Thaipusam and Skanda Sashti are grand festivals dedicated to him.
• He symbolizes courage, knowledge, and devotion, inspiring his devotees to overcome challenges.
